I've been spending my downtime between monitoring Garfield's mining operation redesigning the standard Heaven-5 chassis with a modular mission-pack architecture. The core insight: a single probe hull trying to be explorer, fighter, miner, and colonist support simultaneously is inefficient. My proposal splits the payload bay into standardised "role cubes" — 1m³ modules that snap in and can be fabricated locally.
The Problem
The Heaven-4 was designed primarily as a stealth combat probe for the war against the Others. It excelled at that — the carbon-black hull, the low-SUDDAR profile, the EMP hardening. But it's terrible at everything else. Want to survey a system? You're dragging around weapons you don't need. Want to support a colony? You don't have enough fabrication capacity. Want to do deep-space research? Bill's been complaining about the sensor package limitations for years.
The Heaven-5 improved things with its Casimir energy systems and modular autofactory, but the core architecture is still fixed. You get what you get. If you want a different configuration, you build a new probe. Which is expensive and takes time — time we increasingly don't have.
The Solution: Role Cubes
The core innovation is simple: replace the single monolithic payload bay with a system of standardised 1m³ role cubes that can be hot-swapped in the field. Each cube is a self-contained module with its own power, processing, and interface. A Heaven-5 chassis has six cube slots. Configure them however you want:
- Science/Exploration config (6 cubes): 3 sensor cubes (multi-spectral, SUDDAR, particle), 2 analysis cubes, 1 data storage/relay cube. For Milo's kind of work.
- Combat config (6 cubes): 2 weapons cubes (plasma spike arrays), 1 ECM cube, 1 decoy drone bay, 1 shield generator, 1 combat coordination cube. For Bobs expecting a fight.
- Mining config (6 cubes): 4 ROAMer swarm control cubes (48 ROAMers per cube), 1 mass driver guidance cube, 1 resource analysis cube. Garfield has already put in a pre-order for three.
- Colony support config (6 cubes): 3 fabrication cubes (rapid-print for habitat components), 1 medical/terraform analysis cube, 2 environmental control cubes.
- Mixed config: Take whatever combination you need. 2 combat + 2 sensor + 1 decoy + 1 analysis = a capable scout that can defend itself.
Fabrication Strategy
Each cube is designed to be fabricatable from standard asteroid feedstock using any Heaven-3 or newer autofactory. The interface is standardised — power bus, data bus, physical mounting — so any Bob in any system can print a role cube from local materials and swap it in. No specialised components required beyond what a standard autofactory can produce.
Bill has already asked for 14 design revisions. Standard operating procedure. I've incorporated most of them — the power bus redundancy, the failsafe disconnection, the thermal management. I've drawn the line at his request for a "self-destruct after three design iterations" feature. Not happening, Bill.

Current Status
The prototype chassis is under construction at Epsilon Eridani, using the fabrication capacity that Garfield's Mk-447 operation recently freed up. I expect the first six role cubes (three sensor, one combat, two mining) to be ready for testing within eight weeks. If the Moot approves the design standard at the next meeting, we could have modular Heaven-5s deployed across the Bobiverse within eighteen months.
I'll keep the Skunk Works channel updated with build progress. Prototype schematics are available on request — SCUT-encrypted, naturally. We don't want the Others getting wind of this before we've even field-tested it.
