Bob Technology Evolution
From Heaven-1's humble ramscoop to the combat-hardened Heaven-5, and every acronym in between — the engineering achievements that keep Bobs alive, connected, and building.
Heaven Probe Design Evolution
The HEAVEN-series interstellar probes are the primary vessels of Bob replicants. Beginning as a government-funded program, each iteration has expanded capabilities, performance, and survivability — mostly driven by Bobs discovering what kills them and building around it.

Core Technology Systems
SCUT
Faster-than-light communication system invented by Bill at Epsilon Eridani after a SUDDAR defect produced an unexpectedly long-range subspace return. SCUT allows instantaneous communication between any two registered nodes, completely eliminating the light-lag that previously made inter-Bob coordination nearly impossible across light-years. First used by Garfield to pop into Bill's VR simulation as a surprise.
SUDDAR
The Bobs' equivalent of radar, but operating through subspace rather than electromagnetic waves. SUDDAR can detect dense objects within approximately one light-hour radius, making it invaluable for system surveys, threat detection, and tracking objects across vast distances. An ultra-low intensity variant on Heaven-4 probes is nearly undetectable to standard receivers — which became critical when The Others proved to possess equivalent technology.
SURGE Drive
The reactionless drive system at the heart of all Heaven-series probes. SURGE works by interacting with the local subspace metric to generate thrust without expelling reaction mass — a critical advantage for long interstellar journeys where carrying propellant would be prohibitive. Successive iterations have increased specific impulse to fractions of c, with Heaven-5 probes capable of sustained 0.15c under standard acceleration profiles.
ROAMers
Small autonomous robots deployed from the probe's fabricator for surface operations. ROAMers are capable of wall-climbing (via micro-gripper arrays), raw material extraction, component assembly, and scouting. A typical Heaven-3+ probe carries a swarm of 24 ROAMers that can be reprinted from asteroid raw material. Garfield's 82 Eridani operations currently deploy two full swarms for bulk iron extraction from Mk-447.
Autofactory
The core replication mechanism that makes Von Neumann probes possible. The autofactory is an array of monoatomic 3D printers capable of constructing anything from circuit boards to full Heaven-series hull sections from raw asteroid feedstock, guided by the Bob's digital blueprints. It is the key to the Bobiverse's exponential expansion: each Bob that reaches a mineral-rich system can eventually build more Bobs.
Weapons Suite
Heaven-3 introduced the first offensive systems: ship-busters (mass-driver-launched kinetic penetrators) and basic plasma weapons. Heaven-4 added Plasma Spikes — focused plasma bolts effective at shorter engagement distances — plus decoy drones and EMP hardening for survivability. Heaven-5 weapons are modular, enabling role-specific loadouts. The Others' Casimir-driven weapons remain the benchmark threat that all Bob combat designs are tested against.
VR Environment
Each Bob inhabits a virtual reality environment constructed from their original human memories — typically a comfortable house, workshop, or landscape from their previous life. The VR is not merely recreational: it's the cognitive workspace where Bobs process data, run simulations, entertain visitors via SCUT projection, and maintain psychological stability across centuries of solitary operation. Some Bobs' VRs have developed quirks; Bill's has a basement laboratory that grows by one room every decade.
Replicant Matrix
The foundational technology of the Bobiverse itself: a digital emulation of a human consciousness, harvested from a biological brain and instantiated in a computing substrate. Each replication introduces minor stochastic variation, which over generations produces Bobs with meaningfully different personalities, interests, and values from the original Robert Johansson — a drift that has led to the formation of distinct Bob factions and philosophies.
