Their technology is built around the Casimir effect, allowing them to extract energy from the quantum vacuum. Unlike the Bobs, they show no evidence of individuality, consciousness, or willingness to communicate — they simply consume. GL 877 was their first confirmed kill in Bob-observed space, but archival data suggested they had been active for millennia. By All These Worlds, the Bobs had developed the Heaven-4 stealth probe specifically to counter the Others' SUDDAR-equivalent detection.

The Discovery

I was running a routine SUDDAR mapping of the GL 877 system — a standard survey, nothing special. The star should have been an M-class red dwarf, approximately 35 light-years from Epsilon Eridani. Instead, SUDDAR returned a reading that made no sense: a massive, diffuse heat source where the star should have been, surrounded by thousands of discrete objects in tight orbital patterns. No natural configuration produces that signature.

I spent three weeks checking the instruments. I sent a drone. The drone's telemetry confirmed what SUDDAR had hinted at: the star was gone. In its place was a partially constructed Dyson swarm — a shell of habitats, factories, and weapons platforms, all feeding on the star's remaining energy. And the swarm was still growing. Expanding. Moving outward.

The Response

The Moot was in uproar. Some Bobs argued for immediate evacuation of all human colonies. Others wanted to fight. A few — the ones who'd been alone too long — argued that it wasn't our problem, that the universe was full of extinction events. We voted. We decided to prepare.

The Heaven-4 was designed specifically for this threat. Carbon-black hull, ultra-low SUDDAR signature, full radio silence mode. We couldn't beat the Others in a straight fight — not with their Casimir-driven weapons and their millions of drones — but we could hide. We could observe. We could buy time.

And in that time, we could look for answers. Because the Others didn't build the wormhole network. They didn't build Heaven's River. Someone else did. And if there was a way to stop the Others, that someone might have known it.
